How to Prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common problem, affecting people all over the world. The majority of hair loss cases are caused by genetics, and in this case, can't be prevented. However, if you're concerned that you might suffer from hair loss that is not genetic in nature, there are some things you can do. Read on for tips on how to prevent hair loss and keep your tresses healthy and strong.

Sometimes, hair loss is caused by rough styling. Blowdryers, curling irons, straightening irons and hot rollers are all contributors to excessive hair loss. Not to mention the damage that can occur from perms and hair coloring! If you wear your hair in tight elastic bands, that may also be part of the problem. To prevent hair loss from overstyling, simply be kinder to your hair. If you can learn to air dry your locks and work with your natural texture and color, you're ahead of the game. However, if you must mess with your hair, make sure to condition regularly! Protein packs and hot oil treatments applied once a week can help prevent breakage and improve the condition of your hair.

Too much stress can also cause your hair to fall out. To prevent this from happening, make sure you are managing stress properly. While people cannot always remove or eliminate the causes of their stress, they can learn to cope. Meditation, breathing exercises, counseling, and even regular exercise are great ways to manage stress and prevent negative effects from occurring.

Poor nutrition is another common cause of non-genetic hair loss. There's no wonder so many people suffer from this problem. Junk food and sugary soft drinks full of empty calories crowd the supermarket shelves and lure customers with fancy packaging and catchy advertisements. To prevent hair loss from vitamin deficiency, strive to eat healthy whole foods like fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Take a multivitamin every day for a little extra insurance.

Some medications can cause hair to fall out. If your doctor prescribes an anticoagulant, antidepressant, or birth control pill, be sure to ask if hair loss is a potential symptom. Not all of these types of drugs cause hair loss, so it's possible your prescription can be switched to a more suitable choice.

Speaking of your doctor, it's important to see him or her if you experience unexplained hair loss. There could be a variety of medical reasons why you're shedding excess hair, so be sure to get a thorough examination.
